![]() It is why a lot of dates like to meet your parents: in most cases, that's how you are going to be in the future. How your parents behave is frequently how you behave. One book that I'm reading on the subject is ( A book I read a couple months ago on the same subject is It's Not You, It's the Dishes. What you can do is to decide not to be like your parents. And it is very painful to discover this for yourself. One of the fairy tales that we are bombarded with is "love conquers all". It takes a lot of therapy to fix that broken idea as well. Every child of divorced parents thinks that if they did something different, then their parents would still be together (or worse, that their parents divorced because of them). Your parents each have different value systems. Who else has dealt with this a lot in their youth, and how did you get through it? Also, is anyone going through what my parents are experiencing? I'll be going to graduate school in a few months, but honestly I'm worried to leave my teenage sister to continue growing up in this environment. I love them both and I like spending time with them, but it's hard to be part of a family where the parents don't get along, even though they're both great parents. My dad even complains to me about the stress he feels on that issue, and frankly I don't want to hear it, but if I tell him that he will tell me that my mom has turned him into a villain in my eyes. Dad is upset with mom for buying so many things that occupy the house, and mom feels like he cannot shut up about anything. I'm sure they respect each other, but they can't seem to have a single conversation without getting into a full-blown argument. My mom and dad are married, but whenever I come home I see their relationship no different from its normal confrontational, hostile nature.
